Please join us – Ainslie telco tower alternative site inspection

Please come to a public protest and inspection of an alternative site for a 25-metre Indara telecommunications tower at 10:30 this Sunday 28 June.

The tower has been approved for construction on the corner of Limestone Avenue and Quick Street in Ainslie.

Commissioned by Optus and Vodafone, it was approved by the Territory Planning Authority (TPA) which has failed in its role to work in the best interests of the community. The project slipped through ACT planning processes without proper regulatory and community consultation.

It sits on one of the most prominent, public open spaces in Ainslie; and will disrupt an important native grasslands regeneration project.

This approval makes a mockery of the ACT Government’s policy to minimise the visual impact of electricity and telecommunications facilities, particularly along major vistas, corridors and major open space. It also raises questions as to why Ainslie should get this tower in this location when the TPA knocked back a similar tower in Farrer last year?????

Local residents and environmentalists oppose the TPA’s grounds of approval and are lobbying the ACT Government and Indara construction company to relocate the tower to a site just over 100 metres away. This alternative site is technically viable, visually less obtrusive and would be less damaging environmentally.

This Sunday, the Ainslie Residents Association and Friends of Ainslie Volcanics Grasslands will hold a public meeting at the site. Local residents, environmentalists, and political representatives will inspect the proposed alternative location for the tower; and discuss how to get this infrastructure project back in line with community expectations and common-sense planning.
